Storytime #2: Dang, that is awkward.
"girl my stomach dropped to my ass and suddenly i needed to use the bathroom"
I was in the backseat of a Uber on my way to the downtown Soho to meet my friend Lia, the Forbes 30 under 30 nominee, who invited me out for drinks. I couldn't help but ask my male driver what he thought about our topic from the week before. "Well if I'm gonna approach a woman at a bar, I should at least ask to buy her a drink," he said "but the way this city is set up that's the last thing I can afford right now." He was in his late 20s and moved here a few years ago to pursue a career in acting. Presumably, things weren't going the greatest.
I tipped him on the app as I got out the car when a text from Lia came in saying she's running a few minutes behind. Since I'd yet to get my own membership, I took a seat by the entrance and watched as people walked by. Maybe I'll see someone who catches my eye I thought, but my attention was instead caught by the convo two girlfriends were having across from me:
"You're lying?"
"I couldn't make it up if I tried."
"Like right beside you?"
"Right beside me girl"
Apparently, the friend wearing the Amina Muaddi heels I badly wanted attended a private dinner party last night with a group of woman whom aside from the host, she'd never met before. Halfway through the 3-course meal and a few cocktails later, the woman sitting beside her opened up about the man she'd been seeing for a few weeks now.
"girl my stomach dropped to my ass and suddenly i needed to use the bathroom"
It was the same man who ghosted her a few weeks back after two months of steady dating. "I even met his sister!" She proclaimed.
I tried not to make it obvious that I was fully invested in the story. Thankfully her friend was asking all the right questions.
"How would she have known about us? I blocked him on everything before they even met."
Even the host had no clue she dated him. She'd only told a few close friends and days before she never heard from again she mentioned him to her mom. "All I could do was sit there and listen as she described how romantic their first date was. Little did she know", heels said, "it was the exact same date he'd taken me on."
Her friend stared at her with awe.
"So wait..did you tell her?"
She opened her mouth to respond when Lia walked up hurriedly with an apologetic expression on her face. "My bad girl. First round is on me!"
As I walked over to hug my friend, I couldn't help but make eye contact with the girl telling the story. "I love your shoes" I said. She smiled back at me, surprised by my presence and probably now wondering if I'd been listening the entire time.
I too wanted to know the answer to her friend's question, but Lia had already looped her arm through mine and before I knew it we were on the elevator heading to the rooftop.
